ABOUT MUSEUM
Chanderi museum is inaugurated in year 2007 but small scale museum was existing since 03/April/1999. Museum collections are mainly derived from the detached architectural and sculptural members from the ruined temples of Budhi (Old) Chanderi, dating 10th to 12th century AD. Here 5 galleries have been operational i.e. History of Chanderi, Jain gallery, Anandam, Shiva gallery and Digpal gallery. In addition to this, local explorations, local people, police have also do the contribution in museum collection. The most significant pieces are recovered from the Jain sites of Budhi Chanderi and Thuvanji. As already mentioned, Chanderi museum is in two floors, ground floor has a Vishnu Gallery and first floor have been devoted to history of town in which visitor is taken to the journey through the various stages of evolution of the town, starting with pre-historic man who inhabited the Central Indian highlands and has left his mark carving out images in rock caves, spread in the region. One of the significant display in Chanderi museum is the cut-off head of the statue of the Jain Tirthankara. It was recovered by Mumbai custom authorities from smuggler who are intending to smuggle it to their country. Now it is placed safely in a glass-box. Similarly 9th century Varaha sculpture is another striking collection of museum. Here dus-avtar of lord Vishnu have been carved out like Varaha, Vamana, Narasimha etc. Around the central courtyard, open air gallery is located in which 10 inscriptions in Sanskrit language has been displayed.
