Introduction

Bandhavgarh tiger reserve needs no formal introduction today. It is popular tiger habitat for tiger safaris and wildlife photography. This forest is located at the Vindhya hill ranges and spread over two districts of Madhya Pradesh i.e. Umaria and Katni districts. In terms of floral and faunal diversity, this forest is of vital importance. Bandhavgarh tiger reserve covers total area of 1536 sq.km. in which 716.9 sq. km. area falls under core zone and thus remaining area comes under buffer forest. This forest is spread over find varying geographical conditions in which mainly are hilly terrains, rocky slopes, steep hills, marshy lands, meadows with many rivulets, perennials, seasonal nullahs. It is rich in variety of vegetation which includes, grasslands, bushes, dense woodlands etc. This forest is main of mixed, moist and dry deciduous type in which Sal and Bamboo have dominance. For management purpose, Bandhavgarh forest is divided into 9 ranges. Here surveys are conducted to have updated record of mammals, birds, trees, insects etc. As per past records, Bandhavgarh tiger reserve (BTR) have 260 bird species, 34 mammal species and 70 butterfly species. Such surveys are important to carry out after some gaps as this combination of species keeps on changing. Survey reports through such programs play important role in future planning for conservation purpose.

Important Dates

03/Feb/2022: Assembling, registration and briefing at eco-center, Tala village, Bandhavgarh. Then departure to respective camps.
04-05/Feb/2022: Survey on allotted routes.
06/Feb/2022: Back to Tala village, data submission and attend concluding session, followed by departure.

Eligibility

Good physical fitness, knowledge of wildlife are prime requirement for this service. If you are above 18 years, able to walk for long distance to do survey, able to identify various butterflies & birds they you can apply. Volunteers are required to bring there own binoculars, own sleeping bags for this survey. Make sure that you have been duly vaccinated with both doses, wear mask and physically fit (no symptom of fever, cold, cough, breathlessness). These qualities will play an important role in your selection probability. In addition to this, volunteers are expected to follow all laid rules and guidelines. Such surveys have their own associated risks and forest department will not be held responsible for any mishap thus such services are at your own risk.

How to reach

Reaching Bandhavgarh tiger reserve is easy by means of flight, train and cabs. Here nearby airport option is Jabalpur airport (180km) which is having direct flight connectivity with major cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indore, Bengaluru etc. From Jabalpur city, there is not direct bus service to Bandhavgarh so you may travel by cab or train to Umaria station. If you are coming by Train option, then consider Umaria station (37km), Katni railway station (100km), Beohari station (90km) and Jabalpur railway station (180km). Volunteers from nearby cities or towns, may visit by their own cab or local bus services.
