Textile Work

Hand block printed fabric with figurative motifs is the famous textile presentation from the state of Madhya Pradesh. Textile knitting in Madhya Pradesh is as distinguished as the hand printing craft. Soft, subtle shades in delicate weaves come off the looms in Chanderi, near Gwalior. Here, silk is used as the warp and cotton for the weft to produce the famous Chanderi saris. Some saris have gold checks and these combined with the traditional rich gold border along with two gold bands on the pallav, give each sari a special touch. The print or Cheepas of Bagh pattern on fabric in alizarine red & iron black to be used as saris, odhnis, table cloths, bad covers & other furnishings. The traditional prints have a tonal & three dimensional effects. The art of Bandhini or Bandhej & its vibrant colour fabrics are world famed. The techniques involves tying the parts of cloth with a string or in the tiny knots & then the tied sections are immersed in the dye. The result is a fascinating design & patterns. Woven & block printed saris from places in southern Madhya Pradesh like Balaghat, Chhindwara, Lodhikheda etc. capture one’s imagination & are aesthetically quiet charming.

Handloom Work

At Madhya Pradesh we can find certain destinations which acts as an hub of handloom industry. They are not the newly developed handloom centers but traditional ones in which this profession is adopted by generation after generation. They are mostly those destinations which falls on traditional trade routes thus these destinations were developed as a small trade centers. If we carefully study their location, geographical conditions we notice the reasons for their development. One prominent reason was that they fall on trade route. Second important reason was that at those sites, land was not so fertile thus handloom occupation was adopted by local people to earn their livelihood. When development centers emerged, businessmen also emerged and thus markets were developed. Today's Maheshwar, Bhopal, Orchha, Chanderi etc are good example of such destinations.

Zari Zardozi Art

Zari Zardozi is a style of embroidery work that came to India from central Asia in 12th century. It is an ornate and sumptuous craft that brings richness not only to clothes but the person who is wearing that cloth thus it became more popular in upper society of  India. This this art appealed to the royal families and they patronised it. Here in India, clothes with zari zardozi work are very popular and weared during festivals, social gatherings like marriage functions, parties etc. Zari zardozi work is mainly performed on velvets, brocades and silk clothes using silver and golden threads, beads and spangles. In earlier times, actual gold and silver wires were used thus such dresses are affordable to upper class in which mostly traders, royal family members counted. Later with the invent of low priced imitations were introduced that bring down the cost and clothes became more affordable which further increased its market. Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh is main center of zari zardozi work and thus here we can find many shopping options for embroideried dresses. Produced manufactured in Bhopal are sent to many other states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka etc.

Bead Ornaments

While visiting western part of Madhya Pradesh, we will notice bead art. It is believed to be the oldest jewellery style in the world. In ancient time when capital is more concentrated to high class of society usage of gold, silver ornaments was also concentrated to this upper class in which mostly royal family members, landlords, traders were included. Tribal society was far away from this glittering world. They developed their own style of ornamentation in which they used beads to make colourful jewellery. It is believed to be more than 5000 years old tradition. Archeologist says that during excavation site of Harappan civilization, they found the ornaments, talismans, chandeliers. At Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh, we will find healthy population of Bhil tribe. In this region we can find women stringing the colourfuld beads to bring their imagination into reality. This art is being transfered from one generation to another thus it is still surviving. While visiting Jhabua district, located at west of Indore city, we can buy such ornaments and decorative items for seld and to gift someone you love.

Mahakaushal Region

This region comprises Jabalpur region. As we all know that Madhya Pradesh in Central India is more popular for its wildlife & forests. This region is having incfluence of Chattisgarh state as it shares border with this state. This region is hub of wildlife tourism in Madhya Pradesh. All major tiger reserves like Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Pench tiger reserve, Panna national park, Satpura tiger reserve etc. are easily accessible from Mahakaushal region. Even the nature tourism destinations like Pachmarhi hill station & Amarkantak are also part of this region. Here we can find healthy population of tribal people. Thus if you are interested in tribal culture, wildlife and tribal painting art then explore this region. Here villages are comparatively large with mud houses. These villages are suitable for village visit to understand their lifestyle, housing pattern etc. Here land is very fertile thus agricultural production is good which is reflected in their food quality. Although dishes variety is average but life is easy and migration rate is very less. People are more involved on agricultural activity and service sector. Business sector is average and literacy rate is good. This region is not for heritage tourism. Here Jabalpur is the largest city thus it is suitable for arrival & departure purpose. This region is known for gond art, metal art, wood carving work, tattoo art etc. Here tribal belt is hub of these arts and artists are freely expressing there artistic work in various museums, exhibitions.

Vindhya Region

Vindhyan region is the Western part of Madhya Pradesh. Due to presence of Vindhyan mountain range we call it Vindhya pradesh. This region is very much like Mahakaushal region as it is just adjoining to it but differs in culture and lifestyle. Vindhya pradesh region has influence of Uttar Pradesh state as it is just adjoining to it. Earlier this region was forested land but still tribal population is very less here. Even if we visit their villages, we will not find hardcore tribal population as we can experience in Mahakaushal region. Here villages are good and people are mainly involved in agricultural activity and service sector. Here agricultural production controls its economy. Houses were traditionally of mud and wooden work. This region is rich in minerals thus mining industry is existing in this region, offering service to local people. Famous pilgrimage sites like Chitrakoot and Maihar Shaktipeeth are part of this region. Thus it is good for wildlife and religious tourism. Bandhavgarh and Sanjay Dubri tiger reserve are the popular wildlife tourism destinations. Even Prayagraj and Varanasi are also close from Vindhya region thus it is suitable for religious tour itineraries. In this region, we can't find large city with own airport but stil Rewa and Satna region are its popular cities.
