When we google about Mandla city tourist attractions or heritage sites, in search result, we will the image of a fort site called Mandla fort. It is located at the confluence of two rivers. One main river is Narmada and second one is popular Banjar river, coming from Kanha tiger reserve area. Fort site is located in heart of city and can be reached through a narrow or congested route. In historical articles, Mandla fort is also referred as fort of Gond ruler Narendra Shah. It was constructed in between 1691 to 1731, during the rule of Gond dynasty. It was a protected fort made at naturally secured site. Presence of river at one side and man made gorge on other side provided protection from enemies. At present, if we will visit this fort side, we will find it in ruined condition, encroached by local people. In the name of attraction, one can find the grand tower, facing the Narmada river. This tower is called Shah burj.
Mandla fort is a protected site still it lacks in site management. Here we will not find any management authority thus encroached by local people. Here we will not find any ticket counter thus free to visit at anytime. It approach road is highly congested thus we need to walk through market area and can reach the place. Here Shah tower is the only good place to photograph and share. Its location is good, offers scenic view of Narmada river.
Before making of Mandla fort, gond rulers were using Ramnagar fort for stay and management purpose. Ramnagar fort and its surrounding buildings are still in good condition but due to lack of proper security arrangement, water crisis in summers, ruler Narendra Shah planned to shift into better location thus at the confluence of two rivers, they selected Mandla town area for there new fort construction. Thus power center shifted from Ramnagar to Mandla town. It remained under the control of Gond dynasty till 1781. After this came under control of Maratha rulers and remain in there control till 1818. Later on Britishers took control of it till 1947.
