Maheshwar is a heritage city of Khargone city in Madhya Pradesh state. It is located on the bank of Narmada river with many river-bank temples and ghats. We can easily visit this beautifully located ancient town through Indore city. It is about 90 km south-west of Indore and well connected by road option. Maheshwar is part of Malwa region. History of Malwa region is inseparable from Holkar dynasty as they ruled here for many centuries and provided political stability to this region which helped the society to have peaceful life and offered economical benefit to the region. In Holkar dynasty we will find power centers at Indore and Maheshwar towns. Most famous Holkar dynasty ruler queen was Rani Ahilyabai Holkar. She provided the main identity to Maheshwar by establishing the capital city to this place thus place was fortified, ghats and temples were developed. On first look, it resembles like Varanasi river bank area.

Pilgrimage

Ghats are Maheshwar are almost similar to ghats of Varanasi thus in many bollowood movies, ghats of Maheshwar was shown as ghat of Varanasi. Narmada river is considered as most holy river in India, more than Ganges. Thus river bank is flourished with many temples. Presence of Narmada river is the reason why fort was constructed here. Thus at Maheshwar ghat area, we will find may small and grand series of temples like Rajrajeshwar temple, Ahilyeshwar Mahadev tempoe, Jwaleshwar temple, Baneshwar temple, Kaleshwar temple, Kashi Vishwanath temple etc. The temple at mid of river is Baneshwar temple. As majority of tourists are visiting Malwa region for 2 jyotirlingas at Omkareshwar and Ujjain thus by adding Maheshwar, they can extend there pilgrimage trip in Indore circuit.

Maheshwar is popular for its Maheshwari sarees. Here we can find some handloom centers where local artists still work on handloom to produce hand-made sarees which are sell through local shops and even exported to other countries. Maheshwari silk is very popular among Indian women society and often purchased to gift someone they love.
