Introduction

Pandav fall is a natural gorge site inside Panna tiger reserve at Madhya Pradesh. It lies on route between Panna town and Panna national park Madla gate. Being part of tiger reserve, it is managed by park management team and thus all the forest department rules and regulations will be applicable on this site. It has fixed operational timing and can be visited in day time only. Visitors need to check visitor timing and opening-closing status, before going to site. It is a paid site which means, visitors need to pay visitor fee, guide fee on mandatory basis. Forest department guide will accompany you during visit and share his/her knowledge with you to enhance your visit experience. Ticket counter is on main road thus visitor can collect their visitor tickets from it and through vehicle, reach the actual cave site, inside the forest area. Note that walking from gate to fall site is not safe due to forested stretch where predators often registers their presence. This site is recommended for physically fit visitors as it involves walking, going downside and returning back through stairs. Visitors with poor physical health, walking issues may avoid it or may just have a look from top and return back. Its name Pandav caves is derived from Hindu mythological epic Mahabharata characters and it is local believe that Pandav brothers spend sometime in these natural caves and thus named Pandav caves. Here we will notice man-made structures which was made by local rulers who visits this site for leisure hunting and resting. Due to presence of water and damp rocks, surrounded by trees, sun light falling remains restricted and thus here we will feel cool, even in summers. This coldness attracts many bee-hives and thus sloth bears also registers their visits in the form of claw marks on trees.

How to visit

For visiting Pandav fall, we need to first check if it is open or closed and then check the timings. It is operated for fixed duration thus visitors must reach the spot as per visitor timings. On Panna town to Panna Madla safari gate route, we will find the ticket counter and entry gate, located on main road so that visitors could easily find it. At ticket counter buy your visitor tickets, give vehicle details and pay guide fee. Using guide service is mandatory. They are local trained guides who will explain you about this forest, fall site, local animals and rocks information. For visiting this site, all visitors should carry their ID documents, for verification purpose. Carry your own water bottles and avoid carrying any eating stuff. Avoid carrying any inflamable items like matchbox, cigarette lighters etc. Due to forest site, do not smoke inside the entry gate. During your visit, do not feed any birds or animals. Parking space and washroom facility is available near fall site. On reaching the downside, we will find wet surface so be careful in walking as due to damp and wetness, it is slippery at some spots. As per rule, mobile phone restriction will be applicable here also so carry your own camera for photography. Here pay your attention on understanding the natural location, rocks information, incoming water, old structure, natural caves, sloth bear claw marks and its local history. This will enrich our visit experience.

Name Derivation

During discussions and online search, we will notice that sometimes it is called Pandav falls and some people call it Pandav caves. Basically it is called Pandav falls and caves. Here we will notice presence of waterfall (seasonal) and natural caves thus both are present. Due to its hidden location, local people have believe that Mahabharata characters spend sometime of their life in these caves, during their exile period and thus name was given Pandav falls and caves. Guides also shares information that Indian freedom fighters also visits this site for their secret meetings. It is possible that during peak summer season like Apr-May-June months, we may not find waterfall but water will remain available in pool.

How to reach

Pandav-fall is in Panna tiger reserve area, away from Panna township. For visiting this water-fall, tourists are suggested to have their own vehicle (taxi cab or personal vehicle). It is just 40kms from Khajuraho and can be visited while staying at Khajuraho hotel. It is located inside the Panna Tiger Reserve area thus final journey is possible by road option, using taxi cab or personal vehicle. It can be reached by flight, train and by road options. By Train: Pandav fall is located in Panna National Park. Its nearest railway station is Satna which just 100kms from fall place. Second best option is Katni Junction station 140kms. Both stations are very well connected with major cities like Varanasi, Mumbai, Delhi, Agra, Bhopal, Howrah etc. Further journey from railway station to Pandav fall is possible by taxi option. By Road: Pandav fall is well connected by road option. It is on little diversion from Khajuraho-Bandhavgarh route or Panna-Jabalpur route. Bus service is available on this route but from road to actual fall site, visitors need vehicle so we recommend taxi service to visit this scenic place. Its nearby towns are Panna city, Khajuraho, Chhatarpur, Satna etc.

Best time to visit

Visit to Pandav fall is mostly associated with the visit to Panna national park and Khajuraho temples. Thus its best time to visit matches with the good time to visit Panna national park and Khajuraho temples. As per our experience and guests service, best time to visit Pandav fall is from October to March month. Although large number of tourists visit Panna national park in summers like Apr-May-June months but till that time, water inflow get reduced in Pandav fall and thus we have not included summer time in its best time to visit.
