Katni in Madhya Pradesh is a meidum size old city with narrow lanes, congested market place. So far we know about this city due to presence of lime-stone furnace and railway junction. Story behind the discovery of these rock painting site is almost similar to discovery of many other rock painting sites. Initially this was ignorant region of city due to presence of rock. Due to rocky region, human society avoids the site for establishment purpose and was used for mining purpose. In ignorance, it is believed that many painting sites were damaged and destroyed. While doing a morning walk, around this region, one knowledgeable person pass through it and noticed the paintings on rock. He took note of it and analyzed them further. On getting assured that these are ancient rock paintings, he informed the authority and get the area fenced and declared as no-mining zone. This is how current painting site was saved and available for us to visit and witness these priceless paintings.
Katni lies in National Highway 30 (NH30) which connects Kanya Kumari to Varanasi. Due to this connection, it has direct road link with many of the important cities like Jabalpur, Nagpur, Rewa, Varanasi etc. Similarly due to railway junction, city have some very good train connection with presence of 3 important railway station which as Katni Junction, Katni Murwara and Katni South.
