Sloth bear (Melursus ursinus) safaris are very much possible at Central India region. They are native to Indian subcontinent. Their prime habitat includes forested regions like dry forest (deciduous and tropical), scrublands, grasslands with rocky outcrops and wetlands. At Central India region, we can easily find matching habitat locations at Panna tiger reserve, Satpura tiger reserve, Kanha tiger reserve, Pench tiger reserve etc. Thus these forests are considered as the best sloth bear safari habitat destinations and are considered ideal for sloth bear safari tours.
While selecting the destinations for sloth bear safari tour, we need to be carefully ensure following points in mind:
Sloth bears do their routine movements throughout the year thus they can be seen during jungle safari drives at anytime of the year. Their is not period when we can say that it is period of zero possibility. Still through our safari experience of different periods of the year, we can say that period from Feb to May month is the best time to see sloth bears movements to do photography and videography. Mother bear with cubs are often seen in this period. As majority of cubs are born in December-January months this we can expect their first appearance in period of Feb-May. In addition to this, presence of Mahua flower, dryness in forest, limitation of waterholes, termite hills etc are some major factors which are responsible for better sighting possibility, in this period.
If you are planning for a wildlife photography tour with sloth bears in mind then begin your initial planning 6-7 months in advance. You can divide your planning schedule as:
| Period | Planning |
| Before 6-7 months | Study and choose your safari destinations and draw your tour plan itinerary. Here you decide which will be your arrival, departure point, how to move in between 2 destinations, how long to stay at one destination. |
| Before 5-6 months | One tour plan is finalized, share it with us to cross check the plan, analyze if any correction is required or something to add or removed. Check the available accommodation options. Collect your tour plan cost and compare it with your budget. If we need any tour plan change due to budget reasons, we can do and finalize the tour plan with hotel options. |
| Before 4-5 months | You can make advance payment, share the visitor IDs (active passport details for foreign nationals). Doing this in advance will help us to do safari permits booking on very first day when online window will open for bookings. Till this time, we can decide or do amendments on our visitors list. Once safari permits are booked, amendment will not be possible which means those names which are mentioned in safari permits and do jungle safaris and new names can't be added or replaced with other visitor. If you require any amendment, after permits booking they only available option will be to book the new permits, as per availability and then cancel the existing permits with cancellation charges. |
| Before 3-4 months | Till this time, you safari permits will get booked and then we will begin the hotels room booking procedure. Till this period, you will free to make changes in hotels / resorts. For room booking process, we will have to make either 100% or 50% advance payments to every hotel so that we will get our rooms confirmed. Tentative room blocking is possible only for 24 hrs for once. If they are not paid in advance then hotels retain the right to cancel our blocking, without any prior intimation and may allot rooms to other guests. |
| Before 2-3 months |
Till this period, we will keep eye on safari updates from our selected safari parks. If we will notice any new development on sighting trend like increase due to death of a sloth bear, sighting suddenly dropped in our selected safari zone or new bear family started seeing in a safari zone which was not booked by us then we will try to make some changes in safari zones, as per availability and new developments. This change can be in between day safari zones or in between day and night safari schedule. Before doing any change, we will first update you, discuss with you, check the possibility, analyze the existing permit cancellation charges and then take the decision. Any animal sighting trend is always dynamic in forests. It may get changed when our targeted animal count is very less like it happens in tigers, leopards but not happens in deer, antelopes, birds. |
| Before 1-2 months | Till this time, all your safari permits, hotels, flight tickets will be booked on confirm basis. Only leftover part will be cab booking for ground movements, in between 2 destinations. Now we will start the cab booking procedure. Here you will have the freedom to make changes in cab type, with no cancellation charges. Till this period, we will keep eye on safari updates from our selected safari parks. If we will notice any new development on sighting like increase on |
When we will be on sloth bear safari, we need to be mentally prepared for some other animal sighting sacrifices. Here our main indication will be towards big-cats (tigers, leopards) sighting. During day time safaris, we may find us in situation when we will have two possibility where first one will offer us chance to see tigers / leopards and second choice will be to check new spots for sloth bears. In such situation we may have to lose the chance for tigers sighting due to taking chance for sloth bear sighting. Here we need to remain calm and never regret on missing such opportunities. Sometimes we will have bear sighting but will be so short that we may not get time to take photographs and animal get disappeared. During night safari drives, we may not get good photographs due to poor lighting conditions and thus we will have to rely on videography of sighting. Here we may choose the middle path policy in which we will do the photography of every important thing, coming on our way, during safari drive, without loosing focus on sloth bear like if tiger, leopard, birds seen during our safari movement, take quick photographs and move on. This will give us better satisfaction.
