Bundelkhand in Central India is derived from the ruling period of Bundela rulers. Its simple meaning is that territory which was controlled by Bundela rulers, have geographical and cultural similarities. Due to such similarities, a section of society demands to declare this region as a separate state. It comprises parts of northern Madhya Pradesh (larger share) and south-west Uttar Pradesh (smaller share) states. Topography of this region comprises hilly terrain, rocky landscapes, rugged terrains thus it is more a dry region with less fertile land facing water crisis. Yamuna river forms its northern boundary while the Vindhya region forms its southern boundary. Tough geographical conditions made this region tough for human society thus here local people are more hard working and under poverty. At the same time, it was land of bravery with encapsulates proud history of Chandela and Bundela dynasties.
Their are many popular places which falls under this region. At Madhya Pradesh state, districts like Sagar, Damoh, Panna, Chhatarpur, Tikamgarh, Datia etc falls under this region. Where as in Uttar Pradesh, districts like Jhansi, Jalaun, Lalitpur, Mahoba, Banda, Chitrakoot etc falls under Bundelkhand region. Thus from tourism point of view, places like Khajuraho, Panna tiger reserve, Datia, Jhansi, Chitrakoot etc lies in this region.
It is a hindi language word which comprises 2 words Bundel + Khand. Here Bundel refers to the Bundela rulers and Khand means province or region. Collectively it is called the region ruled by Bundela rulers. Earlier its old name was Jajhauti or Jijhoti which was under Chandela dynasty rulers. At some records, we will also find its name as Jejakbhukti or Jejabhukti which means Jeja;s province. Here Jeja refers to Chandela dynasty ruler Jahashakti who was controling this region. After departure of Chandela dynasty, Bundela dynasty emerged in to power. Phase of 12th to 14th century was a transition period when Chandela rulers were becoming weak, losing control over their territories and Bundela rajputs were gaining power and thus between 14th to 15th century, they gained prominence and thus this region was known by their rulers as Bundelkhand.
