Introduction

 Central Provinces map

Central Provinces (CP) was a vast region of Central India which comprises parts of today's Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, complete Chattisgarh and some parts of Odisha states. Among them, biggest chunk was from Madhya Pradesh state in which places lie Sagor, Jabalpur, Katni, Mandla, Narmadapuram, Betul, Chhindwara were important constituents. When we enters into Maharashtra region, it comprises Vidarbha region in which Akola, Yawatmal, Chanda fort, Chandrapur, todays Tadoba national park etc. were part of it. At Chattisgarh, whole state was part of it and when we enters into Odisha state, Kalahandi, Sambalpur region were part of it. It was created in 1861 as Central Provinces and with the passage of time, regions were added like Sambalpur region was added in 1905 and by 1936 it was renamed as Central Provinces and Berar when Maharashtra Berar region (Akola, Yawatmal etc) were merged into it. In that time, Nagpur was the capital city of this province.

Timeline

After 3rd Anglo- Maratha war, British India forces took control over large area of Central India and slowly slowly they started intensifying their grip over this region and expand their presence. Even till that time Central Provinces was not declared. It came into existence by 1861. Thus in order to understand this expansion and important incidents about Central Provinces, please check below given timeline description:

Year Landmark Incidents
1818 British India forces won the 3rd Anglo-Maratha war and entered into Central India region. The portion they won was provisionally put under the superintendent of Polital Affairs of Bundelkhand.
1820 A division of 12 districts was formed and named as Saugor and Nerbudda Territories. Jubbulpore (Jabalpur) was declared as its capital and administrative headquarter.
1835 Saugor and Nerbudda Territories were incorporated into newly formed North-Western Provinces in which majority of portion of today's Uttar Pradesh state was included which includes Agra, Oudh, Allahabad (Prayagraj) etc. 
1861  Central Provinces formaly created and Nagpur was declared as its capital city.
1862 Due to Nagpur region hot climatic conditions, dual capital concept was introduced. Nagpur remained political capital in winters where as Pachmarhi was declared summer capital of Central Provinces. 
1862 Sambalpur and other parts of today's Odisha were added in it.
1905 Sambalpur and Oriya speaking regions were transferred to Bengal.
1936 Berar (Vidarbha region) region was added and thus renamed as Central Provinces and Berar region.
1947 Remained a province of Independent India
1950 Re-organized and its major portion was declared as Madhya Pradesh state. Even by this time, Nagpur remained capital of Madhya Pradesh, till 1956.
