Introduction

The Birla museum in Bhopal city is a prominent spot to visit. It is a well known archeological museum established in 1971 by the prominently known Birla family (associated with G P Birla group). It is located in the Arera hills area, near to the Birla Mandir or Laxmi Narayan temple complex. Location is very scenic as it offers panoramic view of Bhopal lower lake and city area. It is an archeological and art museum in which we can find prehistoric artifacts, stone sculptures and some rare manuscripts.
 

Visitor Information

Sharing some quick visitor information like:

• Its timing is from 09:30 hr to 18:00 hr. It means it is available for day visit only.
• Here we need to buy entry ticket by paying fee. Cost for Indian visitor and foreigner visitor varies. Foreigner visitor need to pay more than Indian visitors.
• Entrance fee charges are very nominal for both Indian and foreigner visitors thus one can plan to visit. We advice visitors to carry some cash (INR) to pay the entry fee and camera fee. Do not rely on card payment or UPI payment.
• For photography, visitors need to pay camera fee separately as per photography equipment.
• Just like other museums of Madhya Pradesh, it also remains closed on every Monday and national holidays.

Visitor Galleries

Museum collections are organized into categories so that visitors can find collections as per their interest. Some of the prominent categories are:

• Prehistoric tools: Here we will find stone tools, hunting equipment, daggers etc of Paleolithic to Neolithic eras.
• Bhimbetka Scale Motel: Here we find some carefully made replica of UNESCO world heritage site featuring miniatures versions and cave murals. Those who are not able to visit actual Bhimbetka rock shelters, they may visit this museum.
• Ancient Sculptures (7th to 13th Century): This gallery showcases well preserved Hindu iconography retrieved from nearby historical excavation sites like Ashapuri and Raisen which includes Varaha Avtar (Boar incarnation of lord Vishnu), Uma-Maheshwar (lord Shiva & Parvati) on Mount Kailash, figure of lord Ganesha and Chamunda statue.
• Numismatics and Terrocotta: It is a collection of rare punch-marked coins, ancient currencies used during various ruling dynasties. In addition to this we will also find 2nd century historic scripts.
• Birla family collection: This gallery is dedicated for collection of porcelain, art pieces, historical documents, crockery items of Birla family etc.
