Pashupatinath temple in Mandsaur is one of the popular temple in Northern Madhya Pradesh. Although Mandsaur is not prominently highlighted by Madhya Pradesh tourism but now here infrastructure is improving and department is paying attention towards tourism promotion of this region. This temple lies in southern part of Mandsaur city and very popular among visitors. Pashupatinath temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is believed that temples was of 5th Century which indicated towards the ancient past of this region. It is also referred as Asthamukhi Temple as lhe Shiv Linga have 8 faces due to which is also called Astha means Eight Faced Temple.
This temple belongs to Pashupatinath tradition which is one of the six major traditions under Shaivism. If we go by the ancient inscriptions, we will find that this site was earlier known by the name of Dashapura. Temple site is just adjacent to Shivna river and during monsoon period, temple gets flooded which is taken as if river raises its level to touch the feet of Lord Shiva. Here condition of Shivalinga is in very good. Temple has four doors in four different directions which allows devotees to enter from all 4 directions. Height of Shivalinga is 8Ft. x 10.5Ft. Weight of Shivlinga is estimated to be of 4.6 Tons. Temple was built on the platform of 90 ft. long and 30 ft. wide. Another important highlight of the temples is its 100kg gold plated pitcher. With the passage of time, many other Hindu God Goddess statues were established within the temple.
Lord Pashupatinath temple is open for visitors from sunrise to sunset. Still as per local sources, temple is open for visitors from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM in all 7-days of a week. Temple management team retains the right to change the timing as per circumstances so it just for idea only.
As it is Lord Shiva temple so Feb-March month is the time when festival Maha-Shivratri falls in which large number of devotees, visit their nearby Lord Shiva temples. Similarly, months of July-August are also auspicious in which large number of devotees visit Shiva temples on every Monday. But as it is a monsoon season so little bit challenging also in undertake long tour in monsoon period.
