It is a popular wildlife sanctuary on the way from Shivpuri to Jhansi known for bird watching. It is one of the best places in Central India for birding. It is established as a wildlife sanctuary in year 1981 and is spread over an area of 202 sq.kms. Sanctuary was created with intention to provide ideal conditions for survival of Great Indian Bustard. Its management & control is under Field Director of Madhav National Park in Shivpuri district. So basically it is a small birding destination in Northern Madhya Pradesh. Although it was created with intention of Great Indian Bustard conservation but unfortunately it failed in its basic purpose and now this rare bird can be seen only in limited area of Rajasthan state. Due to extinction of this locally available and inclusion of private land in notified area of wildlife sanctuary, local public has strongly opposed this notification and thus finally National Board of Wildlife & Madhya Pradesh Government denotified this sanctuary. Final approval from Hon'ble Supreme Court is awaited, in this case. After the approval from court, this will be considered finally denotified and thus private land owners can do sell & purchasing of land for different purpose.
