When we talk about cenotaphs in Madhya Pradesh, we will get some limited sites option in which Orchha cenotaphs are most popular one. These cenotaphs are now heritage monuments, build on Betwa river bank. Cenotaphs are nothing but a building built by Hindu rulers, on death of some popular active or past rulers, at a place where death rituals were carried out. These sites are mostly on the bank of some big or small river. Cenotaphs are mainly erected on cremation site of ruler. Here we will find cenotaphs of both male and female rulers of central India. They are found in large numbers at different princely states, kingdoms but all are not made so grand thus we don't pay attention towards them. Being a tourists, we would like to see some grand structures which can be seen at those kingdoms which were more stable, powerfule and ruled over a long duration (for many generations) like Buldela rulers, Chandela rulers in Bundelkhand region, Holkar rule in Malwa region, Scindia dynasty in Gwalior region etc. Grandness of cenotaphs was also dependent on the availability of building material thus cenotaphs in Bundelkhand and Malwa region are more grand in compare to souther Madhya Pradesh which was ruled by Gond rulers, for many generations. These cenotaphs serves many purpose, in addition to memory. Its grandness reflects the greatness of that ruler, financial status of kingdom, stability of kingdom and cultural advancement. political stability of ruling dynasty.
