Birds in Bandhavgarh

Bandhavgarh national park is suitable destination for birding. One can visit this forest for birds photography. This tiger reserve is spread over Vindhya range of Central India. Here we can find Bamboo and Sal forest in majority with presence of mixed forest areas thus giving shelter to more than 250 birds species. This figure includes some resident species, seasonal visitor birds and small section of migratory birds. In this page, we have tried to prepare a birds checklist of Bandhavgarh tiger reserve so that we will understand what to expect during jungle safari drives. From birding point of view, here most visited safari zones are Tala zone, Khitauli zone and Magadhi zone. Presence of hilly terrains, waterholes, wetlands and surrounding villages offers natural habitat conditions for variety of birds to survive successfully in this region. Tala zone hills are one of the important birding site which offers vultures sighting with malabar pied hornbill sighting. Where as wetlands and ponds of Khitauli zone offers good chance to see Indian Paradise flycatchers which are also the state bird of Madhya Pradesh. For best birding experience, we have make it our main safari objective and drive safari vehicle accordingly which includes no rush for tiger tracking but devote efforts for birds tracking. Spare a safari slot free and take a nature walk near by Tala gate, here surrounding tree cluster of Charanganga river offers good opportunity to do birdwatching at free of cost. Similarly passage from Tala village to Panpatha village, also offers good birding opportunity.

Birding Areas

If you are visiting Bandhavgarh national park with objective to do birding, explore the popular birdwatching areas. Change your safari objective from tiger safari to birding safari. For a birds photography we need to do proper planning in advance. Here popular birding areas are in Tala zone, Khitauli zone and some patches of Magadhi zone and Panpatha zone. One can even do good bird waching during nature walks in nearby Tala villages for which you don't even need any safari permits. Charanganga river belt, adjoining to Tala village offers some good opportunities to track various bird species. For Madhya Pradesh state bird, try to visit the marshy lands of Khitauli zone. On just entering inside the zone through Khitauli gate, on left side, we find a good wetland zone here we can easily have sighting of Indian Paradise fly-catchers, serpant eagle, jungle owlet, eagrets. For storks, visit around the large pond area of Khitauli zone, here we will easily get chance for storks photography, sambar deer on waterhole area. Similarly, without any safari permit, we can take a walk on Charanganga river, near Tala zone entry gate. Here we can easily locate movements of Black Ibis. Even you will visit the Dhamokhar to Gohadi village route, near by Samode safari logde, we will find a small pond. It is nice spot for Kingfishers and Ibis sighting.
